Programs
Jewish Events:
Programs for the Jewish community have been provided to complement the programs of its member organizations. These have included Jewish concerts, Chanukah Community Celebrations, Lag B’Omer study –ins and Yom Yerushalayim celebrations. Recently the FJCC has joined other organizations in community celebrations.
Food Services:
The FJCC provides a monthly food pantry and kosher weekend meal program to eligible individuals through the Metropolitan Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty.
Project Education:
We have about 500 students in our ESOL and civics classes with most classes averaging 15-20 students. Our educational coordinator is from the Ukraine while other teachers have been Chinese, Korean and Indian. Although the majority of our students are Asian we attract people from around the world. With decreasing government funding, we look to increase the number of classes with other funding as the demand continues to grow.
Healthy Lives, Healthy Relationships is a series of workshops to help people lead healthier lives, form more satisfying relationships and strengthen marriages and families. See Workshops section for topics.
Multicultural Committee:
The FJCC Multicultural Committee was started to bring people of different ethnic origins together to share the rich diversity of culture and arts. Its goal is to break barriers and build bridges between communities through cultural exchange and to promote acceptance and harmony in the borough of Queens- the most ethnically diverse community in the world. Established in 1996, the committee is comprised of a loose confederation of agencies, individuals and cultural institutions.
Recent events include “Dance into Spring”, an annual celebration at the Poppenhusen Institute and “Voices and Other Instruments of the World” at the Queens Borough Public Library, Flushing Branch, through the International Center, both partners of the committee. See Partners section for other members.
